Weapon Skills  ( For 3ed games only)

Unlike third edition, I will be doing weapon skills, and they will operate in much the same manner as the the other skills. All character will ignore what the third edition says about various weapon groups,ie simple, martial. etc. You do not gain these, you use the skill points shown below to buy ranks in a weapon, with each rank giving a character an extra +1 to their Total Attack Bonus. The table below will show how many weapon skill points the various classes start out with, and weapon skills can only be bought with these points. The table also shows how many skill points are gained initially at first, and then what levels a subsequent skill point is earned.

For example, Tevis the fighter has at 1st level, 4 weapon skill points, so he decided to put 2 points into longsword and two into longbow. This then gives him a +2 to his attack with both these weapons. For point of reference however, within those 3ed games that I run, Strength and Dexterity bonuses will not apply to the to hit modifier. Instead, the strength bonus will only apply to damage that the melee weapons do. With this in mind, we see that Tevis' base attack bonus is +1, therefore his total attack bonuses are +3 for both longsword and longbow. When he reaches third level, he can opt to buy a new rank in the two weapons he has already learnt, or choose to learn a new weapon again.

The skills stated on the pages linked above are set out for both 2ed Ad&d and 3ed D&D, however the tables themselves have the costage for 2ed Ad&d upon them only. The cost for the various skills for 3ed D&D is identical to the way described in the PHB, that is class skills cost 1 per rank, and that cross-class skills cost 2 per rank. Since I have kept the listings in the set up as stated in the 2ed PHB, the following table is to be used to show which are class and cross-class skills for the various classes.
